People for Life sponsors a Pro-Life Essay Contest every spring for grades 7 to 12. The contest is limited to students in Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Venango, Warren, Ashtabula and Chautauqua counties.
Cash prizes will be awarded as follows: $50 for first place, $25 for second place, and $15 for third place. A set of winning essays will be chosen from the 7th to 9th grade entries and another from the 10th to 12th grade entries.
Contestants may write on any aspect of abortion, infanticide (currently a hot topic in the news), euthanasia (including assisted suicide), or embryonic stem cell harvesting.
Upbeat topics such as any of the following may be chosen: adoption, motherhood, pregnancy and fetal development, personal experiences doing pro-life activities (e.g., the March for Life), and the blessings of knowing people with mental and physical disabilities (e.g., Down syndrome).
Word limits are 500 for grades 7-9 and 750 for grades 10-12. People for Life can offer ideas about specific topics and guidance for researching a chosen topic. Contestants should include their name, address, phone number, age, and grade.
